When I’m on a story, I can usually keep my emotions in check. It’s a skill reporters develop after covering tragic deaths, graphic car accidents, life altering fires, and whatever else comes our way.
But yesterday was different, yesterday’s story got to me in a way I didn’t think a story could.
Seeing Shai so weak from her cancer treatments was difficult because her strong spirit was ever present. The support she has from her family and friends is unmatched.
When I saw those boys and Clarissa sit down and shave their heads, it dawned on me how big of a gesture it really was. Some were saying, “it’s just hair”, but as her classmate Carter Hubka pointed out, it was to let Shai know that she’s not alone and didn’t have to feel different.
What I saw yesterday was not only a shining example of a community pulling together to support one of their own, but of how selfless the human spirit can really be.
